El Salvador surprised everybody in 2021 by announcing to make bitcoin legal tender. It was followed by the Central African Republic in 2022 and there are several more countries that are likely to follow the same path.
Who’s next?
We have to admit that these countries are not impressive in terms of the size of their economies and populations, but it was never expected that the world’s giants would adopt bitcoin first. It is logical that the countries, at the edge of the financial system, would be the first to adopt bitcoin. Who could follow?
Panama
Panama borders El Salvador, which makes it no surprise that it is on the list. Unlike many other countries that are on the verge of christening bitcoin legal tender, Panama has already produced an outline of its bitcoin legislation. This so-called draft came out the day after El Salvador officially adopted bitcoin.
Cuba
Cuba has not yet adopted bitcoin as legal tender, but has certainly taken steps in the right direction. The country recognises bitcoin as a means of payment and residents are free to use it.
Mexico
During Bitcoin 2022, Mexican Senator Indira Kempis surprised everyone by taking the stage. Unfortunately, she did not yet announce that Mexico will definitely adopt bitcoin as legal tender, but she is going to fight for it. Adoption of bitcoin by Mexico would be great since, unlike the other countries on the list, it is a huge country.
