The crypto world in 2025 is experiencing a renaissance, marked by record-breaking Bitcoin prices, the rise of stablecoins, and increasingly professional journalistic coverage shaping the market. Bitcoin is reaching new all-time highs and cementing its role as a digital store of value. Stablecoins are becoming mainstream, while more and more banks and financial institutions are integrating crypto-based products into their portfolios. In short, the industry has reached a level of maturity previously thought impossible.

A key factor in this development is the work of journalists, media outlets, and influencers reporting on blockchain, Bitcoin, and digital finance. Whether in traditional media formats, blogs, or social platforms, they keep a growing audience informed about digital assets. But who are the journalists truly delivering the most valuable insights? And which bloggers, influencers, and media channels are worth following?

For the third time, communications agency newskontor has released its annual Top List of the most relevant journalists covering blockchain and new finance—a guide for all market participants keen to know who is shaping the conversation. This year, the focus is firmly on Europe.

“Crypto is no longer a fringe topic in financial markets. The market volume has now reached an astonishing $4 trillion. For investors, it is crucial to base decisions on well-informed and balanced reporting. The experts featured on our list make a significant contribution to this”

explains Marco Cabras, Managing Director of newskontor.

This year’s Top List features 80 personalities from nine European countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, and the United Kingdom. It highlights how reporting on blockchain and digital assets has become increasingly international.

The crypto team at newskontor researched across Europe to identify who reports regularly, knowledgeably, and with influence on crypto-related topics. The findings make it clear: the circle of authors covering blockchain and digital assets is expanding—not only in number but also in quality.

“Knowledge of blockchain and digital assets has grown significantly, both among journalists and the public. Topics like Bitcoin and tokenisation are now firmly established within mainstream media, from the business sections of daily newspapers to specialised financial portals,”

says Marco Cabras.

Quality journalism enables sound decisions

The crypto market continues to gain momentum in 2025. In the United States, the first strategic Bitcoin reserve has been established, while President Donald Trump has launched his own cryptocurrency—two developments with global implications. In contrast, neither the EU nor Germany is yet discussing Bitcoin reserves, but more financial institutions are making Bitcoin investments available to their clients.

Journalists across Europe have different perspectives on these developments. Sascha Rose (Focus Money) sees Bitcoin becoming a “must-have investment,” while Sven Wagenknecht (BTC-Echo) speaks of the “professionalisation of the entire market,” as more banks and brokers integrate crypto products and tokenisation rises as a future-defining theme. Christin Jahns (Das Investment), however, warns of an overwhelming dynamic:

“New coins and ETPs are constantly appearing, and political events have direct impacts. It’s increasingly difficult to keep track.”

Others emphasise the need for clarification. Independent journalist and Beating Beta expert Marian Kopocz stresses the importance of distinguishing between Bitcoin and altcoins, which are often treated as one and the same. Jannik Tillar (Capital) sees “hardened fronts and a religious cult around certain cryptocurrencies” creating communicative challenges. His colleague Niklas Wirminghaus argues that journalism must go beyond the buzzwords and ask essential questions:

“What is the real value of this technology? What unintended consequences are we creating?”

Christian Mäder (bitcoinnews.ch) warns against giving short-term hype too much space at the expense of long-term issues such as energy consumption or Bitcoin’s potential in emerging markets. Marcel Urech (20Minuten) points out that while Switzerland is a key blockchain hub, this is

“barely recognised outside the scene.”

Journalism between hype, markets, and responsibility

The intertwining of crypto with politics and global developments is a recurring theme. Astrid Dörner (Handelsblatt) reports from the US on how politicians, investors, and entrepreneurs use crypto tokens and projects for their own purposes. British journalist Louis Thompsett (Fintech Magazine) criticises that

“mainstream media too often only see volatility or celebrity coins.”

He notes the emerging macroeconomic shift driven by MiCA and the trend towards national Bitcoin reserves.

Werner Grundlehner (tippinpoint.ch) expects competition between central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and private stablecoins. Freelance financial journalist Sandra Willmerroth sees the convergence of DeFi and TradFi, the rise of stablecoins, and tokenisation as the key issues ahead.

Yet with all the global significance, careful journalistic analysis remains crucial. Dominic Döllel (BTC-Echo) cautions:

“In the age of AI, it’s more important than ever to verify information rather than blindly trust it.”

For Alex af Heurlin of Helsingin Sanomat, Finland’s leading daily, the journalist’s role is to separate signals from hype, particularly in distinguishing scams from legitimate products. Henning Eklund, tech reporter at Sweden’s Svenska Dagbladet, calls for more reporting on the darker sides of crypto, such as its use by criminal networks for money laundering. He also criticises the narrow focus on European and US markets, as crypto often has a far greater impact elsewhere in the world.
